Case Study: A Hand-Built Black Hog Wire Fence and Gates in Carmel Valley, CA
A retired contractor in Carmel Valley built his own black hog wire fence and gates around a hillside garden and gravel courtyard under the oaks, with a new grandchild, and a dog he's still looking for, in mind. Here's how it came together.
Bob C. knows his way around a build. He spent his career as a contractor, so when the family wanted a safe, good-looking enclosure around the garden and courtyard of their Carmel Valley home, he did the work himself. The brief, in his words: a "dog and new grandchild enclosure." As he added, "We actually don't have a dog yet, but have been looking."
He ordered BarrierBoss black hog wire panels unframed, built his own wood frames and gates around them, and finished the last of the hardware himself. The result is a fence that looks like it has always been part of the garden.

The Goal: A Safe, Open Space for a New Grandchild and a Future Dog
The property sits on a hillside among the oaks, with timber-edged steps climbing from the house to a gravel courtyard with a fire pit, benches and potted plants. It's a beautiful spot, and an open one. With a new grandchild in the family and a dog on the wish list, the garden needed a clear boundary.
A solid fence would have walled off the trees and the view, and it would have felt heavy on a hillside. Hog wire keeps the space open while marking it clearly, so the garden still feels like part of the landscape.

The Build: Hand-Built Frames and Gates
Bob ordered the panels unframed so he could build the frames himself. Each section is a natural wood frame with the black mesh set inside and a wide, flat top rail, standing on black steel post bases. The frames step down the hillside with the terrain, and the mesh lines up neatly from section to section.
The gates are where the craftsmanship shows. He built a pair of double gates across the path at the bottom of the deck stairs, and single gates where the fence meets the steps, all framed in the same wood and hung on black strap hinges with a black latch. They match the fence exactly, which is what makes the whole run look custom. As he told us while he was wrapping up: "I'm finishing going up my gates as we speak."

The Result
The finished fence wraps the courtyard and follows the steps down the hill, with warm wood and black mesh against the gravel, terracotta pots and gnarled oak trunks. The open mesh keeps every view of the trees, and the gates make it easy to move between the house, the deck stairs and the courtyard. It's ready for a grandchild, and for the dog whenever they find the right one.

Why Hog Wire Worked Here
This project shows how well black hog wire suits a garden enclosure, especially when you build the frames yourself:
- A boundary that doesn't block the view. The open 4" x 4" mesh marks the space for kids and pets while keeping the oaks and the garden in sight.
- Made for custom woodwork. Unframed panels let Bob build frames and gates to fit a sloped, terraced site, instead of forcing standard sections onto uneven ground.
- Strong without looking heavy. 6-gauge welded steel holds its shape between frames, so the fence feels solid at a modest height.
- Black against natural wood. The dark mesh recedes into the shade under the trees, so the warm wood frames and the garden do the talking.
- Delivered and unloaded. The panels arrived on a BarrierBoss truck, ready to build with.
