What Changed in 2026: California Zone 0 & Updated FHSZ Map
On January 1, 2026, CAL FIRE's updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) map took effect, adding 2.3 million acres to High and Very High risk designations. Roughly 1 in 8 Californians now live in a High or Very High wildfire danger zone — and many parcels that were previously Moderate are now in stricter compliance categories.
At the same time, the State Board of Forestry finalized Zone 0 rules under Executive Order N-18-25. Zone 0 is the first 5 feet around any structure in a fire hazard zone — and within Zone 0, combustible fencing must be replaced with non-combustible alternatives.
What This Means for Your Fence
If your wood fence runs parallel to your home — or any wood section attaches to the structure — it must be replaced with non-combustible material within Zone 0. Approved materials include steel, aluminum, masonry block, and gabion. Wood, vinyl, and most composite materials do not pass Zone 0 requirements.
Existing homes have a 3-year phase-in period. Compliance deadline: end of 2028. New construction in fire zones must comply immediately.

We ordered three Fort Knox panels for a privacy wall. They were easy to move, easy to build before moving them into place. Once build they look fantastic, very solid and easily installed as they measured exactly 8' wide and 6' tall once built. We used 10' 4"X4" post so we could add a little more height then trimmed the post and added post caps.
We'd like to give a special shout out to the Barrier Boss Customer Service team for being so responsive as I was getting anxious to take delivery and get them installed before my hip replacement. They said delivery would be 6-8 weeks, they delivery in about 6 weeks so I had the post in the ground and ready. Following the video instruction the install was simple, taking about two hours to build and install - amazing. We highly recommend working with BarrierBoss and being patient as the wait time is well worth it. We love this product, it looks amazing, we will be back for more fencing in the future. Due to tariffs, etc. they took a quite while to come, and I started to get paranoid I'd been scammed by a fake website (it is pretty impressive)!
