How long do black hog wire fence panels last?
For decades. Each panel is hot-dipped and heavy galvanized, which gives the steel a thick layer of zinc, then finished with a matte black dip-coat over the top. That two-layer protection is why the wire and finish carry a 40-year warranty. If you choose framed panels, the wood frame weathers like any outdoor lumber.
Will the black finish chip, fade or rust?
The matte black is a dip-coating, not paint, so it bonds to the wire instead of sitting on the surface as a thin film. Under the coating, the steel is hot-dipped and heavy galvanized, so the zinc keeps protecting the wire even if the finish takes a hard knock. The wire and finish are backed by our 40-year warranty against rust, fade and corrosion.
Can I paint silver hog wire black instead?
You can, though galvanized wire is hard to paint well. Paint struggles to grip zinc without cleaning and a primer made for galvanized metal, and every panel has hundreds of welds and wire crossings to cover. Brushed or sprayed paint also tends to chip and need touch-ups within a few seasons. Our black panels arrive already dip-coated, so every wire is evenly covered and the finish is under warranty.
What gauge is this hog wire, and will it sag?
The mesh is 6-gauge welded steel, 0.192" (4.88 mm) thick. Each panel is rigid on its own, so it stays flat and straight between posts set 8' on center instead of sagging like rolled welded wire. Framed panels add a wood picture frame for extra stiffness along the top, bottom and sides.
Will a hog wire fence keep my dog in?
For most dogs, yes. The rigid 6-gauge grid holds its shape when a dog leans, jumps or pushes on it, and the standard 4" x 4" mesh contains most medium and large breeds. For small dogs and puppies that could squeeze through, choose 2" x 2" mesh. If your dog is a jumper, go taller: panels come in heights up to 8'.
Can I use black hog wire panels around a pool?
Black hog wire is a popular look around pools, but pool barriers are regulated, and the rules on height, opening size and climbability vary by city and county. Check with your local building department before you order, and ask whether a specific height or mesh size is required. Once you know the rules for your property, we can help you choose the right panels.
Should I order framed or unframed hog wire panels?
Choose unframed if you're building your own frames or gates, need a custom size, or are setting the mesh into an existing fence. Choose framed if you want the fastest install: the panels arrive built in pressure-treated lumber or Western Red Cedar, ready to mount between your posts. Framed panels are heavier, so the larger sizes are a two-person lift.
How much does a black hog wire fence cost per foot?
Your cost per foot comes down to three choices: panel height, framed or unframed, and pressure-treated or cedar framing. Unframed mesh is the most affordable per foot, and Western Red Cedar frames are the premium option. Select a size on this page to see the current price, or enter your fence length in our fence calculator to price the whole run.
How are the panels delivered?
On our own trucks. We deliver and unload on your property, with no freight terminal pickup and no third-party carrier. Unframed panels ship on Light Delivery and framed panels on Heavy Delivery, so an order with both arrives in two deliveries. Your delivery zone, rate and estimated delivery date show in the estimate box on this page.
