Types of Deer Fencing
The type of fence you want will depend on your desired aesthetic, the level of protection required, and your budget. A completely deer-proof solution may require a different approach to a garden deer fence mitigating occasional wandering. The following are three common materials. In today's blog, we will focus on the third: wire fencing.
Deer netting, made from durable polyethylene, comes in various qualities and strengths. It is effective in use in garden fences against deer and blends well with surroundings due to its lightweight visual. Deer will not take the time to chew through it; however, squirrels, rabbits, and groundhogs can.
An electric wire fence keeps deer out by delivering a mild shock when they touch the wire. It's not enough to hurt them, but they quickly learn to avoid the fence. Electric fences have the added benefit of being easy to install and comparatively cheap. Yet, they require careful maintenance, signage, and extra care when children and pets are around.
Wire deer fencing is made from high-tensile steel wire, often galvanized and formed into mesh. It should be high enough to prevent deer from jumping over. Once attached to sturdy posts, the wire forms a strong, long-lasting barrier. While the initial cost can be higher, its durability and effectiveness are excellent.
Tips for A Perfect Deer Fence Installation
The Right Height
Choose an appropriate fence height. With enough space and momentum, adult deer can jump up to 7 feet high, so the fence needs to be tall enough to deter them. BarrierBoss™ heavy-duty deer fencing is available in three different heights: 5’, 6’, and 7’.
Sturdiness and Structure
Use sturdy fence materials like 4x4 treated wood posts set in concrete for the main supports, spaced about 8 feet apart. If the fence mesh needs more structure, you can install top and bottom rails using 2x4 boards.
Ensure proper tension on the wire mesh and that any gates do not have large gaps that deer can exploit.
Preventative Measures
Use welded wire fencing or mesh with small openings (2" x 4" or smaller) to prevent deer and smaller animals from squeezing through.
To deter animals from burrowing underneath, extend the fence underground. Dig a trench and bury hardware cloth at least 6 inches deep.
Consider adding extra psychological barriers. One method is to add additional upper wires above or outside the fence.
Complementing the fence with deer-resistant shrubs is another good deterrent.
Installation Regulations
Remember to check local regulations regarding fence height and placement before installation. A well-constructed deer fence requires an initial investment to protect your garden and landscape long-term.
