Description

Pressure-Treated and Cedar Posts for Your Fence Panels

A fence is only as straight as the posts holding it. These wood posts come in the sizes and lengths our panels are built around, so you can order them with your fence and have everything arrive on the same delivery, with no extra trip to the lumber yard. Choose pressure-treated for the best value and in-ground durability, or Western Red Cedar for a natural look.

4x4 or 6x6? Choosing the Right Fence Post Size

A 4x4 post is the standard choice for fences up to 6' tall. Step up to a 6x6 for 7' and 8' fences, heavier panels, windy sites and every gate, since a gate puts more load on its posts than a fence panel does. Post sizes are nominal, the way all dimensional lumber is sold: a 4x4 measures 3.5" x 3.5" and a 6x6 measures 5.5" x 5.5". Post caps are sized to match, so a 4x4 cap fits a 4x4 post.

Fence Post Length and Depth by Fence Height

A post needs enough length below ground to hold the fence above it. Use this guide to pick the right post for your panel height:

In cold climates, set posts below your local frost line if it's deeper than the minimum shown, and check local building codes before you dig. Space posts to suit your panel width, which is 8' on center for 8' wide panels.

Pressure-Treated vs. Cedar Fence Posts

Pressure-treated: kiln-dried and copper-azole treated, rated for ground contact (UC4A or better). Treatment is forced deep into the wood, so the post resists rot and insects below ground, where posts fail first. It's the lowest-cost option and carries a lifetime limited warranty against structural failure from decay or termites.
Western Red Cedar: naturally rot- and insect-resistant with no chemical treatment, and the upgrade people choose when the posts are on show. It holds its shape well and weathers to a soft silver gray if left unstained. Cedar posts carry a 10-year limited warranty.

How Many Fence Posts Do You Need?

For a straight run, you need one more post than you have panels: 10 panels take 11 posts. A corner usually keeps the same count, since one post sits at the turn. Add one post for each gate opening and one for each separate run, because every break in the fence needs its own end post. You can also price your posts and panels together in the fence calculator.

Protect Cut Ends and the Ground Line

If you trim a pressure-treated post to height, seal the cut end with two coats of a copper-based end-cut preservative (minimum 1% copper). Cutting exposes untreated wood, and sealing it keeps the post protected and the warranty in place. The ground line, where the post meets soil or concrete, is where wood posts see the most moisture and where rot usually starts. Slope the concrete away from the post to shed water, and for extra protection, add a BarrierGuard GroundLine Sleeve. It heat-shrinks around the post at the ground line before you set it, and comes in 4x4 and 6x6 sizes.

📐 Custom Sizing

Most projects fit the sizes listed on this page — those are what we build, stock and price online.

We do make custom sizes within our standard range, and we quote them case by case. If your run falls between two listed sizes — say you need 7′ 6″ when we list 7′ and 8′ — we can build it. The cost depends on the dimensions, the profile and how much material the cut leaves behind, so custom sizes are not listed or priced on the site. Send us the measurements and we will tell you what is possible and what it costs.

Custom sizes are final sale. A panel cut to your dimensions cannot be restocked or sold to anyone else, so custom-sized orders cannot be returned or exchanged. Please confirm your measurements before you approve the quote.

These products can all be modified on site. Trimming a panel to close out a run is normal work, and you do not need us to do it for you — ask and we will walk you through how to cut and seal it properly so the finish holds up.

Just know that a cut edge is no longer a factory edge: cutting or drilling exposes unprotected steel and voids the steel & coating warranty on that component. Done the right way and sealed properly it will still last — so ask us before you cut.

Treated lumber posts: Kiln-dried, copper-azole pressure-treated posts with a lifetime limited warranty against structural failure from fungal decay or termite damage, in ground-contact and above-ground retention classes, when installed to applicable building codes. Field cuts must be sealed with two coats of a copper-based end-cut preservative (minimum 1% copper) to keep coverage.

Western Red Cedar posts: Kiln-dried and naturally decay- and insect-resistant, with a 10-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects and premature structural decay.

Care: We recommend maintaining exposed wood with a quality oil-based penetrating stain to extend its life and keep the finish looking new.

Installation: Proper installation is the installer's responsibility, including the correct concrete mix, post-hole diameter and depth for your soil and frost line, and posts set plumb and level. Damage or premature wear from improper installation is not covered.

Natural weathering, checking and minor warping of wood are normal characteristics, not defects.

Should I use 4x4 or 6x6 fence posts?

Wouldn’t know. Never got them. Their distributor ran out of cedar. That portion of the order was cancelled.

We have a landscaping business and ordered from Barrierboss for a customer would wanted a larger garden area. Could not be more pleased with the quality.
