Will silver hog wire rust?
Not for a very long time. The 6-gauge steel is hot-dipped and heavy galvanized, which covers every wire and weld in a thick layer of zinc. Zinc corrodes far more slowly than steel and protects it, even at small scratches, so the wire underneath stays sound. That is why these panels carry a 40-year warranty against rust and corrosion.
Why is my galvanized fence turning dull gray?
That is normal. New galvanized wire is bright and shiny. Over the first months outdoors, the zinc reacts with air and moisture and forms a dull gray layer called a patina. The patina is stable and slows further corrosion, so it is a sign the coating is working, not wearing out.
What is the white powder on new galvanized panels?
A white, chalky film can form when new panels stay wet or tightly stacked before they are installed. It is called white storage stain, and a light film is usually cosmetic. Store panels off the ground with air between them until you install them. Once they are up in open air, the film normally weathers away as the gray patina forms.
Should I choose silver or a colored hog wire?
Every BarrierBoss hog wire panel uses the same 6-gauge, hot-dipped and heavy galvanized wire with the same 40-year warranty, so it comes down to the look. Silver leaves the zinc bare for a classic farm and ranch look that weathers to a soft gray. Black and brown add a dip-coated color on top, for modern yards or for blending with wood and planting.
Can I use silver hog wire for livestock?
Yes. Rigid 6-gauge welded panels hold their shape when animals lean, push and rub against them, unlike rolled field fence that stretches and sags. They are a common choice for pig, sheep and goat pens, corrals and garden enclosures. For poultry, rabbits or other small animals, choose 2" x 2" mesh so they can't slip through.
Can silver hog wire be used as a garden trellis?
Yes. The open grid gives peas, beans, cucumbers and other climbers plenty to grab onto, and the rigid panels won't bow under a heavy crop. Set panels between posts along a bed, or let your garden fence double as a growing wall. 4" x 4" mesh suits most climbing vegetables and leaves room to reach through at harvest.
Do silver hog wire panels come framed?
You can order them either way. Unframed panels are loose mesh for your own wood or steel frames, posts or existing fence line. Framed panels arrive built into a picture frame of pressure-treated lumber or Western Red Cedar, ready to fasten between posts. Posts are sold separately.
What mesh size should I choose?
4" x 4" mesh is the classic hog wire look and suits most yards, gardens and livestock fencing. 2" x 2" mesh keeps small dogs, puppies, poultry and rabbits in and keeps more critters out. 1" x 1" and 2" x 6" openings are also available.
How are silver hog wire panels delivered?
We deliver them on our own trucks and unload on your property, with no freight terminal and no third-party carrier. Unframed panels go out on Light Delivery and framed panels on Heavy Delivery, so an order with both arrives in two separate deliveries. Your rate and estimated delivery date show in the estimate box on this page.
