Mitigating Fire Risks with Metal Roofing & Metal Fencing

In August 2023, the Hawaiian island of Maui faced a devastating wildfire disaster that would become one of the deadliest in U.S. history. Driven by a convergence of severe drought, invasive fire-prone grasses, and powerful winds from Hurricane Dora, the fires swept rapidly across the landscape, overwhelming the historic town of Lahaina.

Within hours, flames consumed over 2,200 structures -most of them homes- and left more than 100 people dead, with many more injured or displaced. Research, including studies by the CSIRO in Australia, has shown that steel fences provide greater protection during bushfires because of their non-combustibility and superior performance under prolonged flame exposure. In simulated fire conditions, pre-painted steel and metallic coated sheet metal fencing outperformed all other materials, acting as a barrier that can help prevent the spread of flames between properties.
