Does Metal Fencing Rust? Galvanized vs dip-coated vs Dip-Coated Durability

Does Metal Fencing Rust? Galvanized vs dip-coated vs dip-coated Durability

The short answer: unprotected steel rusts. But modern metal fencing uses protective coatings that prevent rust for decades. The type of coating determines how long your fence will last and how it looks over time.

Hot-Dip Galvanization

Hot-dip galvanization involves submerging steel in molten zinc at approximately 840°F. The zinc bonds metallurgically with the steel, creating a barrier that protects even if scratched.

  • Lifespan: 30-50+ years depending on environment
  • Self-healing: Zinc sacrificially corrodes before the steel does — minor scratches heal themselves
  • Appearance: Natural silver/grey metallic finish
  • Best for: Agricultural, industrial, and applications where appearance is secondary to durability

dip-coating

dip-coating applies a dry powder (usually polyester or polyurethane) electrostatically, then bakes it at 350-400°F to form a hard, smooth finish.

  • Lifespan: 15-25 years before fading or chipping
  • Colors: Available in virtually any color — black is the most popular for residential fencing
  • Weakness: If chipped or scratched, the exposed steel can rust. No self-healing properties
  • Best for: Decorative residential applications where color matters

Dip Coating (What BarrierBoss Uses)

BarrierBoss hog wire panels use a fluidized dip-coating process over hot-dip galvanized steel — a dual-layer approach:

  • Layer 1: Hot-dip galvanization for base corrosion protection
  • Layer 2: Fluidized dip-coated for color, UV resistance, and additional barrier protection
  • Result: Two independent corrosion barriers — if the color coat chips, the galvanization underneath continues protecting
  • Colors: Black, brown, green, silver, and rust patina

What About Coastal and Saltwater Environments?

Standard galvanized steel will eventually corrode in high-salt environments (oceanfront, coastal marshes). For these applications, BarrierBoss CoastalSafe panels use 316 marine-grade stainless steel that resists salt spray indefinitely.

Maintenance Tips

  • Rinse with a garden hose once or twice per year to remove dirt and salt buildup
  • Inspect annually for any chips or scratches — touch up with zinc-rich cold galvanizing spray
  • Keep vegetation away from the fence base to prevent moisture trapping
