BarrierBoss corrugated metal panels are known for going the distance. There's the 40-year warranty on much of our catalogue, the quality materials, and the durable construction. But right now, we are going to look at one other factor that sets materials apart: the paint you coat them with.
BarrierBoss primarily uses two high-quality paints on most of our products. HDP paint, which stands for High Durability Polyester paint, is a favourite here at BarrierBoss. HDP is a long-lasting, high-performance coating used on metal surfaces like corrugated metal roofs.
Other BarrierBoss products, like our deep groove metal panels and corrugated metal siding, feature high-quality PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) coating. PVDF is slightly more expensive but incredibly durable. It is the versatile, tough coating you want on an exterior panel that will face the elements for years to come.
HDP is a mainstay because it achieves a pleasing balance between durable weather resistance, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. This makes it a go-to for exterior applications like exposed steel panels, types of metal roofing, and fastened panels.
Something makes HDP paint special. At the chemical level, it incorporates UV absorbers and HALS (hindered amine light stabilizers). HALS act like tiny defenders, capturing and neutralizing the harmful free radicals generated by sunlight. This helps prevent the coating from breaking down, thereby extending the paint's lifespan. This especially matters with surfaces like a standing seam metal roof where UV exposure may be uneven!
HDP paint boasts exceptional weather resistance compared to other common coatings like standard polyester (PE) and silicone-modified polyester (SMP). HDP paint can withstand harsh weather conditions and maintain its performance and appearance for up to 15 years. This extended durability matters for exterior applications, where the paint needs to endure sunlight, rain and wind.
PVDF paint is our other favourite. It is renowned for its outstanding durability and resistance to environmental factors. It also excels in UV resistance, ensuring minimal chalking and fading over time. It excels at repelling pollutants that would cause other paints to break down.
PVDF coatings are a top choice for applications demanding high-performance and long life. Its low maintenance requirements and potential for energy efficiency through cool roofing properties further enhance its appeal.
PVDF coatings offer long-lasting color retention and can be formulated in a wide range of hues. They are ideal for custom architectural applications. Beyond the curb appeal, PVDF paint provides excellent corrosion and chemical resistance, making it suitable for industrial environments too.
Corrosion resistance is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of exposed metal surfaces. Whether it's a metal roof panel, metal siding, or metal fence panels, these coatings protect against moisture and other corrosive factors.
With surfaces like wood fence panels, paints are often made from oil, acrylic, or chalk. Wood paints are designed to adhere to porous surfaces, while metal paints are formulated for non-porous, reactive surfaces. Metal paints contain specialized resins and additives for enhanced performance on metal, while wood paints may need primers to seal the surface.
Even with their many benefits, HDP and PVDF paint are cost-effective when considered in the long-run. While both may be pricier than basic polyester coatings, their superior lifespan and performance make them low-maintenance and worthwhile.
These rugged coatings make sense for anyone looking for a reliable and long-lasting solution. Whether you’re updating a commercial building or working on a residential project, ensure your surfaces look great and stand up to the test of time.
